The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly

picalttag

'Bush On The Couch' by Justin A. Frank. The book was originally written in 2004 and examined the mind of Bush 43 through his actions, words and movements. The current book contains the original book, plus several additional sections that look at any changes, since the first book and to give a prognosis. What is contained in these pages is scary. Bush seems to have serious problems and it is a wonder we are not in worse shape than we are. Fascinating reading. Frightening when you think it's about someone who sits in the oval office.

'The Nine:' by Jeffrey Toobin. This book on the Supreme Court is the best book I have read this year. I am not a lawyer or legal scholar so much of the information about how the court operates was new to me. In additon I wanted to read about Bush v. Gore, the abortion decisions and the decisions on religious displays. I have wondered for years if the Bush v. Gore decision would come back to haunt us and damage our country, our confidence in the court and our faith in democracy and after reading this book I remain very much afraid that it might. From The Sublime To The Ridiculous

'An Inconvenient Book' by Glenn Beck. OK, sport's fans, I never thought I would say this, but Mr. Beck makes O'Reilly and company (take your pick) seem, oh I don't know, semi-literate. Reactionary to a fault, this man either has never been taught nuance--and its relationship to thinking critically--or, in the Anne Coulter fashion of punditry, say the most outlandish things to sell books. Either way, this quasi-fascist is the inconvenient problem to America's woes. Mr. Beck: Have you no decency?

'Bill Of Wrongs' by Molly Ivins, Lou Dubose. Molly Ivins has always been an inspiration to me. She tells the truth about often difficult subjects--being a progressive Texas journalist. However, she brings this forward with a distinctive wit, certainly needed now. Domestic and foreign policy headlines might continue providing late night comedy shows with lots of source material. But, they are depressing me and many other citizens, despite our never having voted for the man. The only thing which really makes me mad is that Molly is not around to promote this book's release. After all of the hard work which she put into warning Texas and the country, she should have been able to tour for this book. Life is so unfair. What is Fair…. An Inconvenient Book: Real Solutions to the World's Biggest Problems eBook edition by Beck, Glenn
FUNNY. OUTRAGEOUS. TRUE. Have you ever wondered why some of the biggest problems we face, from illegal immigration to global warming to poverty, never seem to get fixed? The reason is simple: the solutions just aren't very convenient. Fortunately, radio and television host Glenn Beck doesn't care much about convenience; he cares about common sense. Take the issue of poverty, for example.

Does Everyone Have The Same Dreams?

'Other Face of America' by Jorge Ramos. In The Other Face of America, Jorge Ramos, explores the important issue of Latino immigration. Using oral histories, he shows the human side of immigrants attempting to provide for their family and improve their quality of life. This is an important issue and what is needed is good solid reporting not one-sided opinions. Ramos seems too lazy to do the research. He simply threw together a number of essays written over the years and calls it a book. Thus, we hear no less than six times why the birth rate of Latino families is greater than American families. He cannot even be bothered to edit his work so he ends up repeating himself. It is unfortunate that this respected reporter has not taken the time and effort to explore, analyze, research, and evaluate the immigration issue. I rarely blog about books I don't like but I just had to on this one. Read for yourself…
'Substance of Style' by Virginia Postrel. I found this eBook smart, fun to read, and correct. She tells us that we have entered the "Age of Aesthetics," a time when beauty and style are to be found everywhere, at least for market economies. Every product, every place, and every experience now is supposed to offer a touch of the aesthetic. The reason is simple: increasingly wealthy and sophisticated customers demand "an enticing, stimulating, diverse, and beautiful world." Upon first hearing of Virginia Postrel's new project, I confess I was somewhat taken aback. After her fascinating analysis of political thought in The Future and Its Enemies, what was she doing writing about something as ephemeral as style? I therefore approached her new work with some trepidation, as I wasn't sure where she might take such an odd (to me) topic. I need not to have worried. Somthing Old, Somthing New...

'For Love of Politics: Bill and Hillary Clinton: The White House Years' by Sally Bedell Smith. This eBook is fascinating in that it looks inside the marriage as a powerful partnership that, despite its famous flaws, works beyond the wildest dreams of most people. They've made it work for their common goal. Many of the details of For Love of Politics are well known - Whitewater, Paula Jones, Vince Foster, health care - but the author's intention is, I think, an attempt to understand and explain the complex relationship between Bill and Hillary Clinton. I do not view the book as yet another in an endless litany of campaign propaganda. Despite the length, anyone familiar with the Clintons can read this book very quickly. The stories are familiar, but the perspective is unique.
'The Girl Watchers Club: Lessons from the Battlefields of Life' by Harry Stein. You really get to know & enjoy this lively group, just simple people/guys at first, but ultimately, you realize, complex. In addition, you will understand how these guys from humble beginnings who were allowed to develop to their full potential in a free society helped make America great in the Twentieth Century. However, Harry Stein seems to be suffering from the conservative equivalent of liberal guilt. Contemplating the inequities of a 60's draft that he admits to having evaded, Stein philosophically strokes his chin and says, "I still think the war was wrong, but maybe I should have gone." In spite of its flaws, however, this is a eBook well worth reading! Check below for the Coupon Code to receive a discount on these to eBook titles.

FOR LOVE OF POLITICS eBook edition by Smith, Sally Bedell
During their eight years in the White House, Bill and Hillary Clinton worked together more closely than the public ever knew. Their intertwined personal and professional lives had far-reaching consequences–for politics, domestic policy, and international affairs–and their marital troubles became a national soap opera. Based on unparalleled access to scores of Clinton insiders–cabinet officers, top administration officials, close personal friends–and skilled analysis of a vast written record, including previously unavailable private papers, For Love of Politics is the first book to explain the dynamics of Bill and Hillary’s relationship, showing that they are two halves of a unique whole and that it is impossible to understand one Clinton without factoring in the other.

Girl Watchers Club, The eBook edition by Stein, Harry
Harry Stein gives us the conversations of a group of older men who meet every week for lunch to reflect on their lives and the state of the world. What is a well–lived life? What is honour, and does it have a place in our society? A profound and poignant meditation on the meaning of honour, told through the words of men who lived life according to the forgotten rules of trust and responsibility. From these conversations, Stein shows us men who lived their lives according to values that have since been declared relative or obsolete: honour, responsibility, decency, and an uncynical commitment to being the best men they could be. Stein presents the stories of this remarkable group of men who lived through the difficult time of the mid–20th century and all its wars and social upheavals.

Another Republician Bites The Dust!

'Silent Partner' If you want to read this book you will want to read James McGreevey's book to get the whole picture. Two people who found each other but probably should have never gotten married in the first place. Dina must feel vindicated by telling her side and I don't blame her, but there really are 2 sides to every story. A tragedy for the little child being in the middle of all this, but how blessed Jam & Dina were to have this one positive thing come out of this unusual marriage.

'The Confession' I am glad he is at peace even if only making a half confession. I really am. What about the fact that he would have been running for President right now - had he not been caught? I was prepared to find McGreevey unlikable and pleading, but that was not the case. I could care less about the sex lives of these politicians. They may do whatever they wish as long as they do not do it in their place of business and remember that their position demands ethics -- it is their fiduciary duty to taxpayers -- as well as their duty to be a role-model for our nation's children. Any gay, purple, black, female or gorilla politician is fine with me -- I fully understood his concerns and recognized the dilemmas he faced. Well worth the read! Be sure to check below for you're coupon code for a discount on these two eBooks.

Silent Partner: A Memoir of My Marriage eBook edition by McGreevey, Dina
Dina Matos McGreevey speaks out for the first time in her New York Times bestselling memoir. In August 2004, New Jersey governor Jim McGreevey resigned from office, announcing that he was a "gay American." His wife, Dina Matos McGreevey, the picture of grace and loyalty, perfectly composed in her pale blue suit, gave no sign of the tangled emotions she felt that day, no hint of the devastation that was to come. Since then she has been asked repeatedly about the nature of her marriage, about what she knew and when she knew it. Since then, she has remained silent. Until now. Speaking up at last, Dina Matos McGreevey here recounts the details of her marriage to Jim McGreevey. What emerges is a tale of love and betrayal, of heartbreak and scandal.and, ultimately, of hope. With scalding honesty, she tells of her life with the former governor, of the passion for politics and public service that brought them together, and of the lies that tore them apart. It was anything but happily ever after

Change. Are We Ready?

picalttag

Change, are we ready? This is definitely a changing World as we know it. Hasn't that always been the case though? These two titles are very different but both talk about change in society, history, politics, families, religion, and the so called elite. I found that God and Hillary Clinton by Paul Kengor a good read. Despite my political views (which I won't go there!) I have a weakness when it comes to the Clinton's and wanting to know more. This book fulfilled my hunger. Again a very thoughtful perspective and well written book. Delux: How Luxury Lost It's Luster by Dana Thomas was a title I thought I would never read. This book was recommended to me by a friend so I took a chance. Boy I'm glad I did! The "Style and Cultural Reporter for Newsweek" Dana Thomas did a fantastic job on representing Change. A changing world and society. Very informative and accurate. This eBook will surprise you and leave you wanting more.

God and Hillary Clinton eBook edition by Kengor, Paul
For nearly three decades, political observers have sought to understand the complex relationship between Hillary Clinton's faith and her politics. Now, in this first spiritual biography of the former first lady, acclaimed historian Paul Kengor sets out to answer the elusive question: What does Hillary Clinton believe? Based on exhaustive research, God and Hillary Clinton tells the surprising story of Hillary's spiritual evolution, detailing how her lifelong religious beliefs have intertwined with her personal history to make her the politician that she is today. Born into a strict Methodist family and raised on a spiritual diet of private prayer and self-reliance, Hillary, at a young age, used the Methodist Church's emphasis on community service to catalyze her involvement in the changing world.

Deluxe: How Luxury Lost Its Luster by Thomas, Dana
Dana Thomas, style and cultural reporter for Newsweek, brings a hard-hitting behind-the-scenes look at the world of "New Luxury" and how the massification of luxury goods has ensured that luxury isn't luxurious any longer There was a time when luxury was available to only the rarefied and aristocratic world of old money and royalty. Luxury wasn't simply a product, it was a lifestyle, one that denoted a history of tradition, superior quality, and a pampered buying experience. Today's luxury marketplace would be virtually unrecognizable to the old-world elite. Gone are the family-owned businesses dedicated to integrity and quality; the industry is now run by massive corporations focused only on growth, visibility, brand awareness, advertising, and, above all, profits. Handmade goods are practically extinct, and almost all manufacturing has been outsourced to large factories in places such as China, where your expensive brand-name handbag is being assembled right next to one from a mass-market label that will cost substantially less. Dana Thomas, a journalist who has covered style and the luxury business for The Washington Post, Newsweek, and The New York Times Magazine from Paris for the past fifteen years, digs down into the dark side of the luxury industry to uncover all the secrets that Prada, Gucci, and Burberry don't want us to know. Traveling from the laboratories in Grasse, where Christian Dior and Prada perfumes are manufactured, to the crowded factories in China, where workers glue together "Made in Italy" bags by the thousands, Thomas explores the whole of today's high-end shopping experience to answer some pressing questions: What is the new definition of luxury when advertising for this upscale lifestyle is targeted mainly to the middle-class masses? What are we paying for when quality has given way to quantity, and luxury is no longer just for the upper-class elite? Thomas has travelled all over the world to interview corporate heads and factory workers, the old-money, old-luxury clients and the new luxury-obsessed middle-class consumer, and she paints a surprising picture of today's New Luxury. With Deluxe, she delivers a fast-paced, uncompromising look at the real world behind the glossy magazines and red carpet couture and asks: How did luxury lose its luster?

Restless Virgins eBook edition
by Jones, Abigail

An honest, intimate look at the lives of today's teens—told through the true experiences of friends at a New England prep school

Established in 1798, Milton Academy has a proud history of achievement. It has educated artists and CEOs; it has produced a long line of distinguished scholars and dignitaries; and it has shepherded students through the world of high-pressure academics for generations. Since its founding, the public face of Milton had always been one of integrity and pride . . . until a sex scandal rocked the campus and made headlines in the spring of 2005. The offense? Teenagers doing no more than what others had done before them—except this time they got caught.

Restless Virgins is the riveting real-life story of a group of seniors who were there as the "incident" (as it came to be called) unfolded: Whitney, the athletic and sensual beauty every girl wants to be; Annie, who craves acceptance but is torn between the desire for peer approval and musical success; Jillian, the smart one who is sick of high school drama and desperate to go to college; and Reed, a "hockey god" who has it all but whose charisma masks a secret insecurity.

From "friends with benefits" to STDs, today's teens face a wider array of social and sexual opportunities—and pressures—than ever before. Through its eye-opening yet sensitive depiction of a group of normal kids with normal struggles, Restless Virgins offers an important look at contemporary adolescence no teen, parent, or educator can afford to miss. And it is written by two recent Milton graduates who know this world—and these students—like no others.

White Guilt eBook edition

In 1955 the killers of Emmett Till, a black Mississippi youth, were acquitted because they were white. Forty years later, despite the strong DNA evidence against him, accused murderer O. J. Simpson went free after his attorney portrayed him as a victim of racism. The age of white supremacy has given way to an age of white guilt—and neither has been good for African Americans.

Through articulate analysis and engrossing recollections, acclaimed race relations scholar Shelby Steele sounds a powerful call for a new culture of personal responsibility.

Little Chapel on the River eBook edition
by Bounds, Gwendolyn

Forced from her downtown Manhattan apartment by the terrorist attack of September 11, journalist Wendy Bounds was delivered to Guinan's doorstep -- a legendary Irish drinking hole and country store nestled along the banks of the Hudson River in the small town of Garrison, New York -- by a friend.

Captivated by the bar's charismatic but ailing owner and his charming, motley clientele, Bounds uprooted herself permanently and moved to tiny Garrison, the picturesque river town they all call home. There she became one of the rare female regulars at the old pub and was quickly swept up into its rhythm, heartbeat, and grand history -- as related by Jim Guinan himself, the stubborn high priest of this little chapel. Surrounded by a crew of endearing, delightfully colorful characters who were now her neighbors and friends, she slowly finds her own way home.

Beautifully written, deeply personal, and brilliantly insightful, Little Chapel on the River is a love story about a place -- and the people who bring it to life.

by van Heerden, Ivor
The ultimate inside story: how bureaucracy, politics, and a disregard of science combined to cripple--perhaps forever--a great American city As deputy director of the Louisiana State University Hurricane Center, Ivor van Heerden had for years been warning state and local officials about New Orleans's vulnerability to flooding. But like Cassandra's, his predictions were ignored--until Hurricane Katrina hit on August 29, 2005. Suddenly, van Heerden found himself at the center of a media maelstrom. Stepping forward to challenge the official version of events, he revealed the truth about the city's shoddy levee construction. Now, in The Storm, van Heerden shares up-to-the-minute reporting from his investigations and connects the dots among the Army Corps of Engineers, the bureaucrats, the politicians, and the chain of events--both natural and human--that culminated in catastrophe. An epic of cutting- edge science and systemic bureaucratic failure, The Storm is the first book from a major player in the Katrina disaster and a riveting narrative that brings expertise, passion, and a human viewpoint to America's greatest natural disaster.
